Common questions
How do I decide between benching and underpinning?
Measure your basement width and subtract four feet, which is two feet of bench on each side. If what remains is a room you would happily use, benching is the economical choice. If what remains is a corridor, underpinning is worth the extra cost.
How much floor space does benching take?
Generally 18 to 24 inches of width around the perimeter at floor level, tapering upward. In a 20 foot wide basement that is roughly a fifth of the width once both sides are counted.
Is benching cheaper?
Yes, typically 20 to 40 percent less, because the existing footing is left undisturbed and there is less excavation and concrete work. The saving costs you permanent floor area.
Can I use both methods in one basement?
Yes, and it is common. Underpin the walls where floor area matters most and bench the walls where it does not. Your engineer can design the hybrid, and it takes real money out of a project without costing you anything you would notice.
